🇨🇷 5 Days in Costa Rica: Arenal and Manuel Antonio

August 31, 2026 · 8 min read

Five days in Costa Rica is enough for two contrasting bases: the Arenal volcano region for hot springs, waterfalls, and hanging bridges, and Manuel Antonio for rainforest wildlife that spills onto a beach. The drive between them is about four hours.

Days 1-2 - Arenal / La Fortuna

Arrive into San Jose, drive or shuttle to La Fortuna (about 3 hours). La Fortuna Waterfall, the Arenal hanging bridges, and an evening in the hot springs with the volcano behind them. A guided night walk or a wildlife float on the Pena Blanca river fills a half day.

Day 3 - Transfer south

Drive to the central Pacific coast (about 4-4.5 hours, or a shuttle-boat-shuttle combo). Arrive Manuel Antonio / Quepos in time for a sunset on the beach.

Days 4-5 - Manuel Antonio

An early guided walk in Manuel Antonio National Park - sloths, monkeys, and coatis are most active in the morning - then the park's own beaches for the afternoon. Day 5: a mangrove kayak tour, a catamaran with snorkeling, or just a slow beach morning before the drive back to San Jose for your flight.

How to adjust

  • Prefer one base: do all five days in Arenal (add Rio Celeste and a coffee/chocolate tour) or all five near Manuel Antonio (add a day trip to a nearby beach town)
  • Add Monteverde: swap a Manuel Antonio night for Monteverde's cloud forest, but note the roads are slow
  • Green season (May-November): mornings are usually clear, rain comes in the afternoon - plan activities early

Frequently asked

Is 5 days enough for Costa Rica?

Enough for two regions at a relaxed pace - typically Arenal plus a Pacific beach area like Manuel Antonio. Adding a third region in five days means most of a day lost to slow roads.

Do you need a car in Costa Rica?

A 4x4 gives you freedom, but tourist shuttles and shared vans connect all the major spots on this route, and many travelers skip driving entirely.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

December to April is the dry season and peak. The green season (May-November) is cheaper and lush, with clear mornings and predictable afternoon rain.
