Patagonia: December to March only
El Chalten, El Calafate, Torres del Paine, and Ushuaia are effectively a summer-only destination. December to February has the longest days and the most reliable trekking weather; November and March are quieter with a real chance of cold snaps and trail closures. Outside that window, most lodges and boat trips shut down.
Buenos Aires and the wine country: skip mid-summer
January and February in Buenos Aires are hot, humid, and half-empty as locals leave for the coast. Spring and fall are far more pleasant for walking the city. Mendoza's grape harvest runs late February to April, which is atmospheric but also the busiest and priciest time to visit the vineyards.
The north and Iguazu Falls: aim for the dry season
Salta, Jujuy, and the northwest are best from May to September - dry, sunny days and cold nights. Iguazu Falls is impressive year-round but most comfortable in the cooler, drier months of May to September; summer is intensely hot and humid.
When to avoid
There is no month that is bad everywhere, but a July trip trying to include Patagonia will fail, and a January trip built around Buenos Aires city time will be uncomfortable. Pick your priority region first, then the month.
