The tropical north (Cairns, the Top End, the Kimberley)
Dry season, May to October, is the time to go: warm, dry, low humidity, and the only reliable window for the Kimberley and Kakadu. The wet season (November to April) brings extreme heat, humidity, monsoon storms, road closures, and cyclone risk, though the waterfalls are spectacular and prices drop.
Marine stinger season also runs roughly November to May on northern beaches - swim in netted areas or a stinger suit during those months.
The southern cities and coast
Summer (December to February) is beach-and-festival season in Sydney and Melbourne: warm to hot, long days, and peak crowds and prices, with a school-holiday surge from mid-December to late January. Winter (June to August) is cool and quieter - fine for cities and wine regions, and ski season in the Victorian and NSW alps.
The Red Centre (Uluru, Alice Springs)
Visit in the cooler months, roughly May to September. Days are mild and nights are cold. In summer, daytime temperatures regularly top 38C (100F) and make hiking genuinely dangerous.
The Great Barrier Reef
Reachable year-round, but June to October has the best visibility, calmest seas, and no stingers. Whale watching off the Queensland coast runs roughly June to November.
