This is Brazilian summer - hot, lively, and the peak for Rio, Florianopolis, and the northeast coast. It's also the most expensive and crowded, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. April-May and September-October are quieter shoulder months with still-warm water and lower prices.
Carnival moves every year
Carnival is tied to Easter and falls in February or early March. Rio during Carnival is a bucket-list experience and a logistical scramble - hotels multiply in price and sell out six months or more ahead, and the whole country slows down for the week.
The Amazon and the Pantanal: the dry season
For wildlife, aim for the dry season, roughly May to September (into October for the Pantanal). Lower water levels concentrate animals, expose trails and beaches, and cut the mosquito load. The Pantanal in particular is the best place in South America to see jaguars in July-September.
Iguazu Falls: shoulder months are best
The falls are spectacular year-round. Visit in the March-May or August-October shoulders for strong water flow without the summer heat, humidity, and crowds. Very dry spells can occasionally reduce the flow.
