Germany is a comfortable year-round destination with two clear peaks: the warm, long-day summer for castles, river valleys, and beer gardens, and the four weeks of Advent for the Christmas markets. Everything else is a quieter, cheaper version of one of those.
May to September: the main season
Warm days, long evenings, and everything open. May, June, and September are the sweet spot - pleasant weather without the August peak in prices and crowds at the Romantic Road, Neuschwanstein, and the Rhine and Moselle valleys. July and August are hot by German standards and busiest.
Late November to Christmas: the markets
The Christmas markets run from the Friday before the first Advent Sunday until around December 23. Nuremberg, Dresden, Cologne, and dozens of smaller towns are the draw. It's cold, dark by late afternoon, and city hotels book up early, but it's the single most distinctive time to visit.
Oktoberfest is mostly in September
Munich's Oktoberfest runs about 16-18 days ending the first weekend of October, so most of it falls in September. Munich accommodation triples in price and sells out months ahead during the festival - plan around it deliberately, in either direction.
January to March: low season
Cold, often grey, with some rural attractions and castles on reduced hours. Cities stay lively and cheap, and it's a good time for museums, thermal baths, and a ski trip to the Bavarian Alps.
Frequently asked
What is the best month to visit Germany?
May, June, or September for the outdoors and sightseeing with manageable crowds. Choose late November to December if the Christmas markets are your priority.
When exactly are the German Christmas markets open?
Roughly the last week of November through December 23, ending before Christmas Eve. A few larger cities run slightly longer.
When is Oktoberfest?
It starts in mid-to-late September and ends on the first weekend of October, so it is mostly a September event despite the name.
