North India and Rajasthan: October to March
Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Varanasi are most comfortable from October to March, with warm days and cool nights. December and January can be genuinely cold and foggy in the far north, occasionally disrupting flights and trains. April to June is punishing heat (40C+), and July to September brings the monsoon.
The Himalayas: April to June and September to October
Ladakh, Himachal, and the hill stations are a summer destination - roads and passes open roughly June to September. Late spring and early autumn are ideal; the northern plains' hot season is exactly when the mountains come into their own.
The south and the beaches: November to March
Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and the southern coast are best from November to March - dry and warm. The southwest monsoon (June-September) is heavy here, and a second northeast monsoon hits the Tamil Nadu coast around October-December.
Shoulder considerations and festivals
Late September to early October and March are transitional - fewer tourists, rising heat or lingering rain. Diwali (October or November) and Holi (March) are extraordinary to witness but push up domestic travel demand and prices; book well ahead.
