The sweet spot: March-May and September-November
Daytime temperatures in the comfortable 20s C, cool evenings, and low rain. Petra is walkable without midday exhaustion, Wadi Rum nights are crisp rather than freezing, and the desert landscapes get soft, low light. These months are also the busiest, so book Petra-area hotels ahead.
Summer (June-August): hot and demanding
Petra and Jerash routinely hit the mid-to-high 30s C with little shade, and Wadi Rum and Aqaba are hotter still. Early starts and lots of water make it survivable, and prices dip, but it's not the trip most people want. The Dead Sea, at the lowest point on earth, is especially oppressive.
Winter (December-February): cold nights, possible closures
Amman and Petra sit at altitude and can see cold rain, wind, and occasionally snow, which closes Petra for a day or two. Wadi Rum desert camps get genuinely cold at night. Days can still be pleasant and sunny, and crowds are at their lowest.
Ramadan affects hours
During Ramadan (the date shifts about 11 days earlier each year), many restaurants close during daylight and some sites run shorter hours. It's still very doable, but plan meals and timing around it.
