July to October: peak season and the migration
This is the dry season and the classic time to go. Vegetation thins, water sources shrink, and animals concentrate - the best raw game viewing of the year. The wildebeest migration is in the Masai Mara roughly July to October, with the famous Mara River crossings most likely August-September. Expect peak prices and full camps; book a year out for the migration.
January to February: the short dry spell
A second good window - dry, warm, and less crowded than the mid-year peak. Excellent for the Mara, Amboseli (clear Kilimanjaro views), and Laikipia, without the migration but also without the migration's crowds and rates.
The green season: March to May
The long rains fall mainly April-May. Roads get muddy, some camps close, and grass grows tall enough to hide wildlife. In exchange you get the lowest prices of the year, newborn animals, dramatic skies, and near-empty parks. March is a gamble; June is drying out and good value.
November: the short rains
Brief afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, green landscapes, good birding, and shoulder-season pricing. A solid, underrated time to visit if you're flexible.
