Scotland's weather is genuinely unpredictable, so the goal isn't a guarantee - it's stacking the odds. Late spring and early autumn give you the best mix of daylight, dry-ish days, and a break from the summer midges.
The sweet spot: May, June, and September
May and June have the longest days (sunset past 10pm in the far north in June), the driest average conditions of the year, and - crucially - come before the worst of the midge season. September brings autumn colour, thinner crowds, and still-long evenings, with a slightly higher chance of rain.
The midge problem: mid-June to mid-September
Highland midges are a real factor on the west coast and islands from roughly mid-June through August, worst at dawn and dusk and in still, damp weather. They don't reach central Edinburgh or Glasgow much, but they can ruin a hike near Glencoe or on Skye. Repellent, a head net, and breezy days help.
July-August: peak crowds, peak prices
This is high season. Edinburgh in August is dominated by the Fringe festival - electric if you want it, chaotic and expensive for accommodation if you don't. The North Coast 500 route and Skye get congested. Book months ahead if you travel then.
Winter: dramatic, cheap, and dark
November to February has short days (dark by 4pm), cold and wet weather, and some Highland roads and attractions closed. But cities are cheap and atmospheric, and you get a shot at snow-dusted mountains and the Northern Lights in the far north.
Frequently asked
What is the best month to visit Scotland?
May or June - the driest averages, the longest daylight, and before the midges peak. September is the close runner-up.
When are midges worst in Scotland?
Mid-June to late August on the west coast and islands, especially at dawn and dusk in still, humid weather. Cities are largely unaffected.
Is it worth visiting Scotland in winter?
Yes if you want cheap cities, dramatic light, and a chance of snow or aurora - but expect very short days and some Highland closures.
