South Africa's seasons run opposite the Northern Hemisphere. The best all-round time is the dry winter (May to September) for safari, while Cape Town and the Garden Route are at their best in the southern summer (November to March). You often can't optimize for both in one trip.
Safari: May-September (dry winter)
In the Kruger area and most reserves, the dry winter is prime: sparse vegetation and animals concentrating at waterholes make wildlife easy to spot, and there are fewer mosquitoes and lower malaria risk. Mornings are cold - bring layers for open game drives.
Cape Town and the Garden Route: November-March (summer)
Warm, dry, long days, and the time for beaches, wine country, Table Mountain, and coastal drives. This is Cape Town's peak - book well ahead for December-January. Winter in the Cape is cool, wet, and windy.
The compromise: shoulder months
April and October/early November split the difference reasonably - decent safari conditions and pleasant (if variable) weather in the Cape - without either being at its absolute best.
Other timing notes
- Whale watching (Hermanus): roughly June to November
- Wildflowers (Namaqualand): August to September
- Southern right whales and cooler safari mornings: pack a warm jacket May-August
Frequently asked
When is the best time for a South African safari?
May to September, the dry winter - thin vegetation and animals gathering at water make sightings easier, and there are fewer insects. Bring warm layers for early game drives.
When should I visit Cape Town?
November to March for warm, dry summer weather and beach conditions. December-January is peak and needs early booking; winter (June-August) is cool and rainy.
Can I do safari and Cape Town in one trip at the best time for both?
Not perfectly - safari is best in dry winter, Cape Town in summer. April or October is the usual compromise, giving good-not-perfect conditions for each.
