Ferries run efficiently within a group and awkwardly between them. The Cyclades (Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Milos, Mykonos) are the classic first choice. The Dodecanese (Rhodes, Symi, Kos) or the Ionian (Corfu, Kefalonia) are alternatives. Pick one and stay inside it.
How many days and how to split them
- 7 days: Athens (2) + two islands (3 + 2) - 10 days: Athens (2) + three islands, or two islands at a slower pace plus a Peloponnese add-on - 14 days: three islands plus Athens and the mainland (Delphi, Nafplio) Don't island-hop every second day - the ferry logistics eat the trip.
When to go
May, June, September, and early October: warm sea, everything open, prices and crowds well below July-August. Mid-summer is hot, packed, and expensive on the popular islands. Winter shuts much of the islands down.

- Santorini or Mykonos hotels (3-6 months ahead in season)
- Ferries once schedules open (about a month or two out), especially fast catamarans
- The first two Athens nights
- A rental car or ATV on islands where you'll want one (Naxos, Milos, Paros)
Athens: two nights is enough for a first visit
The Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, and a walk through Plaka and Anafiotika fill a comfortable day and a half. Go early to the Acropolis to beat the heat and the cruise crowds. Then head to the islands.
