🇮🇸 How to Plan a Trip to Iceland: Route, Season, Car Rental, and Booking Order

Step 1: Choose your season

• ✓June to August: long days, open highland roads and the busiest, most expensive period.
• ✓May and September: lower prices, fewer people and variable weather.
• ✓October to March: northern lights, shorter days and winter driving conditions.

Each season changes what you can safely do, so pick your priorities first.

Step 2: Pick a route

• ✓3 to 4 days: Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and South Coast highlights.
• ✓5 to 7 days: South Coast to Vík, Jökulsárlón and back, or a Snæfellsnes Peninsula loop.
• ✓8 to 10 days: the full Ring Road, plus optional detours to the Westfjords or Northeast.

Keep driving days to about four to five hours, with time for stops.

Step 3: Rent the right car

A regular car works for the Ring Road in summer. In winter, choose a 4x4 and be comfortable with snow and ice. F-roads in the highlands require a 4x4 and generally open only in summer, with river crossings that require experience. Read the rental insurance options, since gravel, sand and ash damage are common issues.

Step 4: Book what sells out

Book lodging, especially in summer, and popular activities such as glacier hikes, ice cave tours and lagoon visits. The Blue Lagoon and similar spas require reservations. Restaurant and tour times can be limited in smaller towns.

Step 5: Stay safe and flexible

Check road conditions at road.is and weather and alerts at safetravel.is before you drive each day. Never stop in the road for photos, stay behind barriers at cliffs and beaches and respect sneaker-wave warnings on black sand beaches. Weather changes fast, so build in buffer days.

Budget and packing tips

Iceland is expensive, so save by cooking some meals, staying in guesthouses and using grocery stores. Pack waterproof layers, warm base layers, sturdy shoes, a swimsuit for hot springs and a reusable water bottle, since tap water is excellent.
