New Zealand's mistake pattern is predictable: people try to see both islands in 10 days and spend the trip driving. The fix is to match your route to your time and accept that you'll leave things for next visit.
One island or two
Under 10 days: pick the South Island (Queenstown, Wanaka, Fiordland, the glaciers, Aoraki/Mt Cook) or, for a gentler trip, the North (Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Tongariro, Wellington). 12-16 days: both islands is reasonable. Two weeks split evenly is the classic first trip.
Vehicle and pace
A rental car plus motels suits most first-timers; a campervan suits couples and groups comfortable with holiday parks. Plan no more than 3-4 hours of driving on move days, and build in full days without a drive - the roads are winding and the scenery demands stops.
When to go
December-February is summer: long days, warm, busiest and priciest. March-April and October-November are excellent shoulders - fewer people, lower rates, still-good hiking. June-August is ski season in Queenstown and Wanaka and quiet elsewhere.
Book these well ahead
- Milford Sound cruises and the road/coach in summer
- Any of the Great Walks (Routeburn, Milford, Kepler, Abel Tasman) - huts open for booking months in advance and sell out in minutes
- Queenstown accommodation in peak summer and ski season
- The Interislander or Bluebridge ferry if you're taking a vehicle between islands
Don't over-schedule the cities
Auckland and Christchurch are practical entry and exit points more than destinations. One night on arrival to shake off the flight, then get to the landscapes. Wellington earns a full day for its museum and food.
Frequently asked
Can you see both islands of New Zealand in 10 days?
You can, but it's rushed. Under 10 days, choose one island. Two weeks is the comfortable minimum for both.
How much should you drive per day in New Zealand?
Aim for 3-4 hours maximum on days you change locations, and schedule some days with no driving at all. Roads are slower than the distance suggests.
What needs to be booked far in advance for New Zealand?
The Great Walks (months ahead, they sell out fast), Milford Sound cruises in summer, Queenstown lodging in peak season, and the inter-island ferry if you have a vehicle.
