The route that works
Lisbon and Porto are the anchors, connected by a 3-hour train. From Lisbon, day-trip to Sintra. From Porto, add the Douro Valley (1-2 nights) for wine, or head south to the Algarve (2-3 nights) for beaches. Trying to do both Douro and Algarve in one week means too much transit.

- 7 days: add the Douro Valley or the Algarve
- 10 days: Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Douro, and one more region (Alentejo or Algarve) without rushing
When to go
April-June and September-October: warm, dry, and uncrowded. July-August is hot and busy on the Algarve coast in particular; Lisbon and Porto stay manageable. Winter is mild, wet, and very quiet.
Getting around
Trains handle Lisbon-Porto and most city-to-city legs cheaply. Rent a car only for the Douro, the Alentejo, or a self-drive Algarve - and skip it entirely if you're just doing the two cities plus Sintra (Sintra is best by train and local bus or rideshare).

- Lisbon-Porto train tickets (cheapest fares sell out)
- Sintra's Pena Palace timed entry in high season
- A port lodge tour in Vila Nova de Gaia if you want a specific house
- Accommodation in the Douro, which has limited quintas and books up
