Southeast Asia has a well-worn classic route for good reason — it's genuinely well set up for independent travel, with cheap overland transport connecting all the highlights. Here's how to plan it at different trip lengths.
The classic route: the Banana Pancake Route
This loosely defined network across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam has been the standard backpacker trail for decades, and it's popular for a real reason: beaches, temples, and cities are all connected by cheap, frequent overland transport, so you rarely need to fly between stops.
One month: the most common trip length
A well-tested one-month route runs Bangkok (3 nights) into Siem Reap (4 nights) for Angkor Wat, then Ho Chi Minh City (2 nights), north through Vietnam to Hanoi (10-12 nights spread across stops), then Luang Prabang in Laos (4 nights), looping back overland to Thailand — enough time in each place without rushing.
Two weeks: pick one or two countries
With only 2 weeks, trying to hit all four countries means mostly transit. Picking Thailand plus one neighboring country (Cambodia for Angkor Wat, or Vietnam north-to-south) gives real time in each place instead of a rushed sampler.
Three months: the ideal length for the full route
Three months is widely considered the ideal length to do the full loop properly — roughly one month in Thailand, two weeks each in Laos and Cambodia, and a month in Vietnam — traveling completely overland without needing internal flights.
When to go
Dry season, generally November through April, is the sweet spot across mainland Southeast Asia — Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and the west coast of Malaysia are all more pleasant and easier to travel through overland during this window than in the wet season.
Frequently asked
Do I need to fly between countries in Southeast Asia?
Not on the classic route — overland buses, trains, and boats connect Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam reliably, which is a big part of why this route is so budget-friendly.
What's the minimum trip length to make this worthwhile?
Two weeks is workable if you focus on one or two countries; the full four-country loop realistically needs a month, and three months lets you do it without feeling rushed anywhere.
