Oahu
Honolulu and Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, the North Shore, and the most hiking and food options per square mile. It's the most affordable island (more flights, more hotels, more competition) and the easiest without a plan. The trade-off is that it's the most developed and crowded - Waikiki is a high-rise beach city, not a hideaway.
Maui
The balanced choice - strong resorts, good beaches, the Road to Hana, Haleakala at sunrise, whale watching in winter, and snorkeling at Molokini. Prices are high and the west and south resort areas get busy. (Check current conditions and respectful-travel guidance for Lahaina and West Maui before planning that area.)
Kauai
The 'Garden Isle' - the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, and a lush, low-rise, slow feel. It's the best island for nature and quiet and the worst for nightlife, variety of dining, and rainy-day backups. One main road, no building taller than a palm tree, and weather that's wetter on the north shore.
