Lisbon, Portugal
3 Days in Lisbon
A compact, walkable city that rewards slow mornings and late dinners.
Best time to go
April–June or September–October, before/after peak summer heat and crowds.
Ideal trip length
3–4 days, or tack on 2 days in Sintra/Cascais.
Budget note
One of Western Europe's better values — great food and wine stay affordable even in nicer spots.
Day 1 — Alfama & the old city
Start at Miradouro das Portas do Sol for the view before the tour groups arrive, wander down through Alfama's narrow lanes, tour São Jorge Castle, and end the day at a miradouro with a glass of vinho verde as the sun sets over the Tagus.
Day 2 — Belém & the river
Tram 15 out to Belém for the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery (worth the line). Spend the afternoon along the riverfront, then head back into Bairro Alto for dinner and fado.
Day 3 — Baixa, Chiado & day-trip option
Explore the grid streets of Baixa, ride the Elevador de Santa Justa, browse Chiado's shops and cafés. If time allows, a half-day trip to Sintra's palaces is an easy train ride away.
Quick tips
- The hills are real — comfortable shoes matter more here than almost anywhere in Europe.
- Trams and funiculars are fun but the metro is faster for longer crossings.
- Restaurants outside the main tourist strips are noticeably cheaper and often better.
