Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast
One of the most photographed coastlines in the world, and one of the most crowded if you time it wrong.
Best time to go
Late May–June or September, when the water's warm and the roads aren't gridlocked like July–August.
Ideal trip length
4–5 days based in Positano, Praiano, or Amalfi town, with day trips by boat.
Budget note
Coastal-view hotels command a real premium — booking a stay just off the main strip can cut costs sharply with minimal downside.
Getting around
The SITA buses along the coast road are cheap but slow and packed in peak season — ferries between towns are often faster, more scenic, and worth the extra cost.
Don't skip Ravello
Higher up and quieter than the coastal towns, with the best panoramic views of the whole coastline and far fewer crowds.
Capri as a day trip
Doable from Positano or Amalfi by boat, but arrive early — the Blue Grotto and main piazza get overwhelmed by midday cruise-ship crowds.
Quick tips
- Rental cars are more stress than they're worth on these roads in peak season — buses/boats/private drivers are simpler.
- Book cliffside restaurant reservations for sunset a few days ahead in high season.
- Pack light — many hotels involve stairs, and porters/luggage carts aren't guaranteed.
