Iceland
Iceland Ring Road in 8 Days
A self-drive trip where the road itself is most of the itinerary.
Best time to go
June–August for full Ring Road access and long daylight; February–March for northern lights with a shorter, more weather-dependent route.
Ideal trip length
8–10 days to comfortably circle the full Ring Road without rushing.
Budget note
One of the pricier trips per day globally — grocery-store meals and guesthouse stays instead of hotels/restaurants cut costs the most.
South Coast (Days 1–3)
Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black-sand beach, and Vatnajökull glacier lagoon (Jökulsárlón) — the most dramatic and most-visited stretch, worth the crowds.
East & North (Days 4–6)
Quieter fjord towns, Mývatn's geothermal area, and Goðafoss waterfall. Far fewer tourists than the south coast and some of the best-value guesthouses.
West & Snæfellsnes (Days 7–8)
Often called 'Iceland in miniature' for packing glaciers, lava fields, and coastline into one peninsula — a strong finish before returning to Reykjavík.
Quick tips
- Check road.is and vedur.is daily — weather and road closures change fast, even in summer.
- A 4x4 isn't required for the Ring Road itself, but is for F-roads into the highlands.
- Winter driving requires real caution and flexibility — build slack days into the itinerary.
